Study Information by Species

Cat

Cat

Cats (felines) are used for target animal safety studies, as well as diabetes, metabolic disease, pharmacology, and palatability and nutrition studies to benefit animal health.

Cattle

Cattle

Cattle are used for target animal safety studies to benefit animal health, and in drug residue studies for human food safety.  Calves are used in orthopedic studies that benefit human health.

Dog

Dog

Dogs (canines) are used for drug discovery and formulation pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, toxicology, Type II diabetes, arthritis, atopic dermatitis, and surgical and medical device studies to benefit human health.  They are also used in studies for target animal safety, Type II diabetes, atopic dermatitis, sepsis and endotoxemia, inflammatory disease, arthritis, orthopedics, osteoporosis, dental health, vaccine development, and palatability and nutrition to benefit animal health.

Ferret

Ferret

Ferrets are used in target animal safety, toxicology, and pharmacology studies to develop drugs and vaccines to benefit animal health. They can also be used in emetic studies to benefit human health.

Goat

Goat

Goats are used for target animal safety studies to benefit animal health, and in osteoarthritis and other orthopedic studies to benefit human health. They are also used in drug residue studies for human food safety.

Guinea Pig

Guinea Pig

Guinea pigs are used for development of vaccines and medical devices to benefit human health.

Hamster

Hamster

Hamsters are used for toxicology and medical device studies to benefit human health.

Horse

Horse

Horses are used in pharmacology and target animal safety studies to benefit animal health.

Mouse

Mouse

Mice are used for drug discovery and formulation pharmacology, toxicology, pharmacokinetics, Type I diabetes, dermal edema and hypersensitivity, sepsis and endotoxemia, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, vaccine development, and medical device studies to benefit human health.

Non Human Primate

NHP

Non-human primates, or NHPs, are used in drug discovery and formulation pharmacology safety, pharmacokinetics, Type I and Type II diabetes, atopic dermatitis, sepsis and endotoxemia, toxicology, orthopedics, osteoporosis, inflammatory disease, vaccine development, and medical devices studies to benefit human health.

Pig

Pig

Pigs (swine—or, here at Sinclair, miniature swine) have many anatomic and physiologic similarities to humans and respond to drugs in a very similar way, making them excellent candidates for studies benefiting human health.  In addition to pharmacology and toxicology studies, they are also used for studies concerning Type I diabetes, diabetic complications, glaucoma, spontaneously regressing malignant melanoma, dermal irritation, skin allergies, wound healing, atherosclerosis, inflammatory disease, orthopedics, osteoporosis, arthritis, and surgical and medical devices.

Chicken

Poultry

Poultry are used in target animal safety studies and nutrition studies, and vaccine development to benefit animal health. They are also used in drug residue studies for human food safety.

Rabbit

Rabbit

Rabbits are used in studies to benefit human health, including pharmacokinetics, atherosclerosis, ocular, dermal, Type I diabetes, arthritis, orthopedics, toxicology, inflammatory disease, development of vaccines, and medical devices.  They are also used in target animal safety and animal health studies to benefit animal health, and in drug residue studies for human food safety.

Rat

Rat

Rats are used in research to benefit human health, including drug discovery and formulation pharmacology, toxicology, pharmacokinetics, and vaccine development.  They also are used in studies for Type 1 diabetes, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, orthopedics, and medical devices.

Sheep

Sheep

Sheep are used for target animal safety studies to benefit animal health.  They are also used in studies for osteoarthritis, orthopedics, inflammatory disease, and surgical and medical devices to benefit human health, as well as drug residue studies for human food safety.
